Conant High School’s 2018 Compass Closet members collect a variety of clothing to help students in need.
Kathleene Pendergast and a group of students including Lexi Burt have said that Compass Closet is a non profit organization that was created and expanded based on the thought of the company Patagonia and its advertisement.
“Patagonia is big on “Don’t throw your clothing away, recycle them” and we watched that CEO ad and thought we should have something here where we can bring that forward,” Pendergast said.
The unneeded clothing is still getting put to use by other organizations.
“We do not have much room so we try to trade out the clothes every season, bag it up and take it to savers, which supports the epilepsy foundation,” said Pendergast.
This years’ Compass Closet has been successful and donations have been the biggest impact on the organization’s success.
“Donations have been generous this year, all the donation bins are usually filled,” Pendergast said.
This year, Compass Closet did not take a long period of time to create and expand to be the size that has been desired.
“It took us about a month and a half to get all the clothes we needed to start and we had some clothing left over from last year,” Burt said.
Compass Closet is helping students that all know of each other at Conant High School.
Shayna Tabor, a senior at Conant High School said, “I think the Compass Closet is a great organization.” Shayna added, “I have always donated clothing to the yellow Planet Aid boxes around town but I think it is even better and easier that it can be done in school to help my peers.”
